HOMELESS MEN
Underwear and Socks are the most under-donated, and most needed items of clothing for homeless men.
According the the Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness, as many as 6,900 people who are suffering from homelessness in the District of Columbia:
As many as 600 unsheltered persons sleep on the street in our city;
Over 5,000 persons in Emergency Shelters; and
Over 1,000 persons in Transitional Housing facilities.
GWAP collected more than 5,000 socks and underwear for homeless men since 2014.
Each year GWAP distributes socks and underwear to over 1,000 homeless men.
COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the US.
According to the American Cancer Society, Colorectal cancer death rates are 52% higher in black men compared to white men.
According to the American Cancer Society, screening tests that detect and remove polyps are the most reliable method of preventing colorectal cancer.
60% of colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented with screening.
Each year Marcus Ellis speaks to over 500 men about colorectal cancer to bring awareness of the early testing benefits.
To date, 20 male attendees have been tested for colorectal cancer.
